Distinguishing natural evolution and human impact on estuarine morpho-sedimentary development: A case study from the Vilaine Estuary, France ArchiMer
Traini, C.; Proust, J. -n.; Menier, D.; Mathew, M. J..
Estuaries are coastal areas controlled by hydrodynamic factors such as sea-level changes, waves and tidal currents, and river discharge. This study focuses on the Vilaine Estuary which is strongly impacted by human activity after construction of Arzal dam in 1970. The purpose of this research is to differentiate the role of natural from anthropogenic factors on sediment dynamics within the Vilaine Estuary. We are proposing a hypothetical model based on the hydrodynamic modification and morpho-sedimentary development by analyzing the natural estuarine evolution and the impact of human alteration to the natural system by utilizing datasets including river discharge, tidal currents, winds and wave activities to further combine with photographic, bathymetric,...

Guegueniat, P; Boust, D; Hemon, G; Phillipot, J; Lagarde, G; Heitz, C.
This work has three objectives in view: (1) the establishment of spatial distribution of 40 trace elements in suspensions and sediments of the Seine estuary and bay; (2) the research of non-reactive geochemical tracers of fluvial deposits; and (3) the illustration of sediment dynamics influence on distribution of elements during the particulate period.

Meccia, V.L..
For the first time, the analysis of historical salinity data and new current series is combined with high resolution numerical simulations, with the aim of understanding the processes that occur in the active and important Río de la Plata estuary (South America). With that objective, the first relatively long ADCP current series collected in two points of the estuary are analyzed. Only 25% of the currents variance is accounted by the tide. Approximately another 25% is associated with internal wave activity at the sampling locations, where a strong stratification exists. These waves are forced by land-sea breeze and tide and are very frequent during spring and summer. The remaining 50% of the energy is wind driven and occurs in synoptic to intra-seasonal...

Thomas, Y.
The suspended matter distribution in Channel surface waters during 1981 have been obtained by the interpretation of radiometer recording (Coastal zone Color Scanner working on Nimbus 7 satellite). After imagery calibration and calculation of suspended matter concentration using algorithm from in situ measurements, the maps interpretation allows the study of: (1) resuspension of infratidal fluvial particles by swells and tides; (2) characterizing of intertidal zone given estuarine material by erosion; (3) determination of river plume limits with regard to Seine flow rate; (4) calculation and modeling of solid load; (5) estimation of suspended particles masses and volumes to strike the balance; (6) differentiation of hydrobiological behaviors in Western and...

Geomorfología e hidrografía de los estuarios OceanDocs
Piccolo, M.C.; Perillo, G.M..
Estuaries are coastal-water in which marine and freshwater environments interact. They respond to natural changes, but specially to anthropogenic factors. The definition, environmental factors and classification of estuaries are analyzed. A review is presented of the present status of knowledge on the geomorphology and hydrography of Argentine estuaries.

Het Schelde-estuarium: toekomstvisie OMA
Coosen, J.; Van den Bergh, E.; Ysebaert, T.J.; Meire, P..
Water quality improvement is the main concern of the ICBS (International Committee for the Protection of the Schelde). In 1998 the river states accepted an Action Plan that has to lead to significant improvements in overall ecological values in 2010. The challenge of water management in the estuary is working together (Flanders & The Netherlands) towards an integration of three characteristic functions of the system:
- Safety against flooding;
- A good accessibility of the ports;
- Conservation of estuarine dynamics and improvement of the marine, brackish and freshwater habitats.
In order to facilitate a choice in the near future, a longterm vision has been worked out. Four alternatives are sketched, that differ in...

Braverman, M..
This study encompasses the bio-physical interactions of whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) early life stages living in La Plata estuary (Argentina-Uruguay, South America) to understand how they take advantage of the estuarine dynamics while traveling from spawning to nursery areas and undergoing ontogenetic and associated ecological changes. The analyses used include studies of spatio-temporal distribution length-dependent patterns; growth patterns looking for settlement marks in otoliths; and development related to metamorphosis and ontogenetic variations of the diet and trophic level. Samples and data come from vertically stratified samplings from 3 cruises (2005, 2006 and 2009). Distributional data also comes from an historic database. Results...

Human-induced river runoff overlapping natural climate variability over the last 150 years: Palynological evidence (Bay of Brest, NW France) ArchiMer
Lambert, Clement; Penaud, Aurelie; Vidal, Muriel; Klouch, Khadidja; Gregoire, Gwendoline; Ehrhold, Axel; Eynaud, Frederique; Schmidt, Sabine; Ragueneau, Olivier; Siano, Raffaele.
For the first time a very high resolution palynological study (mean resolution of 1 to 5 years) was carried out over the last 150 years in a French estuarine environment (Bay of Brest; NW France), allowing direct comparison between the evolution of landscapes, surface water, and human practices on Bay of Brest watersheds, through continental (especially pollen grains) and marine (phytoplanktonic microalgae: cysts of dinoflagellates or dinocysts) microfossils. Thanks to the small size of the watersheds and the close proximity of the depositional environment to the mainland, the Bay of Brest represents an ideal case study for palynological investigations. Palynological data were then compared to published palaeo-genetic analyses conducted on the same core...

Modern palynological record in the Bay of Brest (NW France): Signal calibration for palaeo-reconstructions ArchiMer
Lambert, Clement; Vidal, Muriel; Penaud, Aurelie; Combourieu-nebout, Nathalie; Lebreton, Vincent; Ragueneau, Olivier; Gregoire, Gwendoline.
Modern palynological investigations (pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs) have been carried out for the first time in the entire Bay of Brest (BB; NW France), a semi-enclosed oceanic basin flooded during the Holocene that today is exposed to both marine (North Atlantic surface waters) and fluvial (Aulne and Elorn rivers) influences. Palynological analyses were conducted on 41 surface sediments collected in several mudded bays where low-energy conditions prevail, allowing for fine particle decantation, and also on 12 moss samples considered to be pollen rain collectors taken on the periphery of the BB. Furthermore, the BB allows a direct comparison between landscapes and fossilized pollen assemblages in sediments thanks to relatively small watersheds and...

Tutivén, I..
